The Gothic Trail Tour

During the mid-seventeenth century the Swedish 'Deluge' left Poland in ruins. But the Swedish marauders never made it this far south. Poland's borders may have jumped about a bit over the ages, but here you can still find a window onto a world that seems straight out of a folk tale. Dozens of enchanting old Slavic churches have survived here in the foothills of the mountains. They were little known to Westerners for generations, but a clutch of them have just been placed on the Unesco World Heritage List. It was a well-deserved honour, as these wooden wonders are amongst the most magical and distinctive relics in all Poland. Don't miss the chance to root them out!

Part of the reason that these churches remain so little known elsewhere is that you really need a car to get from village to village. We'll dispense with the hassle that comes with thumbing lifts or hopping on buses. Instead, we'll drive you direct from one treasure to the next, stopping at a number of delightful spots on the way. Prepare to be bowled over by the rich murals of the interiors - movie director Peter Jackson would have given an arm and a leg to have filmed these in his Lord of the Rings trilogy!

Amongst the most outstanding churches that we can visit are those at Debno, Harklowa and Grywald. There' might also be an opportunity to stop at the fantastic gothic castle of Niedzica, one of the best-preserved strongholds in the region.

As always, our tour is flexible, and those with a soft-spot for wooden architecture may also be intrigued by the picturesque pre-war spa town of Szczawnica. Savour the best of Old Poland....
